Am I responsible for my spouse’s debts?

It depends on the type of debt, whether it is shared or individual. Like property and assets, some debts will have to be divided during divorce. Any debts that are accumulated before a marriage is individual debt and typically will not be shared in divorce settlements, while debt acquired after a marriage is considered shared debt, and will likely be split fairly in a divorce. To make sure that your rights are protected during divorce while splitting debts, talk about your options with an experienced legal representative.
