David Arquette files for divorce from Courteney Cox

David Arquette has now filed divorce papers in order to end the marriage with his estranged wife, Courteney Cox. Arquette cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason that their 13 year marriage will be coming to an end.

The 40-year-old actor has not asked for child or spousal support, but has asked for joint legal custody. Arquette originally signed the divorce papers in March, but the decision to end the 13-year marriage allegedly did not come easy.

According to the New York Daily News, the couple married in June 1999 after meeting on the set of the movie, ‘Scream’ and they share one child together. In October 2010, the couple announced their separation, but stated that they would remain amicable.

New data shows 79% of separations end in divorce

New data suggests that nearly 79 percent of all couples that separate will eventually be divorced.

A researcher from Ohio State University presenting at the Population Association of America, stated that “Separation is very common and is more common than immediate divorce. Most separations last one year or less, but a few drag on a decade or more before ending in divorce. Other separations stay unresolved.”

One factor that determines whether or not a couple separates first or goes straight to divorce is whether or not there are children under age 5. To find these results, data was collected from 7,272 people who were between the ages of 14 and 22 in the year 1979. Researchers looked into whether or not the individuals were ever married, separated or divorced.

The study found that 51 percent were still married, 60 percent had gone through a marital separation, and of these 79 percent divorced. The average length of separation is two years.

Divorce rate dropping across the nation

The divorce rate has been dropping across the nation and has fallen five percent since 1996.

Researchers in the area have stated that the struggling economy may be a reason for this because divorce can be very expensive. Data has shown that there is a link between the employment rate and divorce.

The higher the unemployment rate is in an area, the lower the divorce rate is. Data also shows that men are getting divorced at older ages and the average age is between 35 and 54. The number one reason that couples decide to divorce is infidelity and second is said to be communication issues.
